SATURDAY, MAY 29, 2004 - The Geek WithinAs wireless becomes more pervasive in our computing lives — from homes and offices to cafés and campuses — it makes sense for me to jump on board, even though I don't have an access point at home. I'm frequently away from my desk but rarely without my laptop. But which to choose: 802.11b or 802.11g? A quick peek on Google and it's clear that 802.11g will overtake 802.11b in 2004. That's good news, which means that 802.11g product selection will increase and prices will come down to earth. * * * After a round-robin between Apple, FedEx, and myself, I've finally got my iPod. Shipping snafus aside, I'm enjoying this nifty little devise. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend one. * * * Getting married not only put me into another tax bracket, it also put me into another technology bracket: from early adopter to early majority. MONDAY, MAY 17. 2004 - New AmericansI was walking in Fenway to meet AJ for dinner and I heard, "Hey, faggot! What's up fag? Yo, faggot!" I looked over to see a black Escalade with lots of shiny metal, and two continental African men taunting this poor guy, who could do nothing but flip them an indignant finger. Fenway's an affluent and progressive city neighborhood, so it was a little jarring to hear. It's also been a while since I've heard such overtly mean-spirited people. These fellows must not know the discriminatory legacy of the United States. Fucking new guys. FRIDAY, MAY 14, 2004 - iZillaThe iTunes Music Store has as a neat function called iMix that allows users to share their playlists, matching their music information to its database for other users to order. How novel: a revenue model that's convenient, multi-laterally beneficial, and not exploitive. My most recent playlist here. THURSDAY, MAY 13, 2004 - Treacherous Little GirlJen coyly suggested that I get an iPod — something I've coveted since its launch. My struggle has always been, do I really need one or is this just wanton consumerism? Well, that's pretty clear. After another beckoning commercial, I announced, "I should just get the damn thing! It's a complete outrage that I don't have one." "Yeah, you're right. You should get one..." I fleshed out that she wants to use it while in Russia for three weeks, and later on her daily train commutes. MONDAY, MAY 10, 2004 - Sho'Nuff: The Shogun of HollywoodTom Cruise is not unlike Madonna. He's an actor that has successfully reinvented himself many times in the almost twenty years since Top Gun. Once dismissed as an actor trading on his good looks, or typecast as a teen heart throb-turned action star, he's produced some nice performances like those in Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut. * * * The Last Samurai has beautiful set designs, dead-on fight choreography, and an interesting historical context. There is great chemistry among the cast members — most notably Ken Watanabe and Cruise. |
